On this episode of ProfitDig Live, we shine a spotlight on a different kind of hardhat hero—lighting tech and touring pro, Seth O. Williams.
Seth has spent years behind the scenes of major concert tours, working with artists like the Goo Goo Dolls and building complex lighting rigs for arena shows and iconic venues like Red Rocks Amphitheatre. In this wide-ranging conversation, he talks about the gear, the grind, and the gratifying moments of lighting up the stage.
“You walk in and you’re the first one off the bus. You walk out and you’re the last one back on,” Seth says. “Everything has to go up before anyone else can even start.”
From explaining what a lighting rig is (a full network of fixtures, power, data, and control protocols) to breaking down DMX and ArtNet systems, Seth makes it clear: this job is both technical and physical, requiring a huge amount of planning and leadership. His days often start before 8 a.m. and go until 2 or 3 a.m.—day after day.
Despite the intense pace, Seth still finds time to give back, leading lighting and tech workshops for middle and high school drama clubs. “I want to show them that this is a real career path,” he says.
He also talks about the future of lighting tech, including wireless controls and the growing role of augmented and mixed reality in show production. The gear keeps evolving—but the values that matter most stay the same.
“The biggest things I look for in a crew are attitude and work ethic,” he says. “I can teach the rest.”
